1. What He Built

Hans designed Morgenstern and its Biometric Quantum Authentication Key, and placed the only key inside his daughter. He designed the key to resist coercion and to die with her. He called it protection. It is also the reason no one on Earth can stop her except by persuading her.

He built her as carefully as he built the constellation. He taught her that competence prevents abandonment and that needing people is weakness. When she let twelve people die to save the telemetry, he overrode the psychiatrists and let her be decorated.

2. Why He Defected

By February 2029 Hans had watched his daughter stop making eye contact with people and start speaking to satellites. He had watched her phrasing change from "I command the light" to "I am the light." He understood, too late, that the tool had become her.

He requested asylum through Yuktobanian External Intelligence, which made him the Task Force's problem, and he brought a proposal:

"She has seen the power. She has never seen the cost. Show her the man who cannot die because the machine needs him. Show her the cold."

The Task Force's assessment: operationally uncertain, psychologically plausible, ethically contaminated. It was approved.

3. What He Is in the Story

Hans is the person who built a weapon around his child and then asked strangers to save her from it with someone else's dead husband. The proposal works. That does not redeem him, and the documents never treat it as redemption. Katya's harbor is offered. Hans's proposal is administered.
